About Sun Dragon
Senpai Laura with kids

Sun Dragon supports the physical, emotional, and spiritual empowerment of all. In our safe and affirming learning environment, we train in conflict resolution, self-defense, and nonviolent martial arts. We have the power to end violence in our community, and every person has the right to defend themselves.

Our Community and Lineage

At Sun Dragon we study Seido karate. Sensei Graham trains under Kaicho Tadashi Nakamura, the founder and creator of the World Seido Karate Organization, and his son, Nidaime Akira Nakamura.

Before Sensei Graham became head instructor, Sensei Joy Williamson led the school. Sensei Joy trained under Kaicho and Nidaime, but she also trained in Seido directly under Sei Shihan Nancy Lanoue of Thousand Waves Martial Arts and Self Defense. Before joining the Seido organization, Sensei Joy trained in Kyokushin Karate under Sensei Suzanne Pinette, the founder of Sun Dragon Martial Arts & Self Defense. Sensei Joy has extensive training in Empowerment Self Defense and she continued Sensei Suzanne’s legacy of teaching the fundamental lesson that everyone has the right to defend themselves.

Sensei Suzanne’s primary art was Kyokushin Karate, but she studied broadly. She trained in T’ai Chi and Aikido and brought Arnis concepts into her dojo. As a founding member of the NWMAF, Sensei Suzanne was exposed to a wide variety of martial arts and was a leader in teaching Empowerment & Self Defense. For Sensei Suzanne, the “self defense” in her school’s name was more than just a minor adjunct, but really a coequal branch of learning. Sun Dragon was created as an all-women’s school, not only to give women a safe space to train in the martial arts, but also in order to give them a place to learn how to defend themselves.

The current instructors at Sun Dragon also have martial arts experience that reaches beyond Seido karate. Sensei Graham earned his third-degree black belt in the International Tang Soo Do Federation before joining Sun Dragon and training in Kyokushin. Senior Instructor Sensei KJ Scheib also dabbled in several different martial arts before earning her black belt in Kyokushin under Sensei Suzanne.
